What is LASIK?What is LASIK?
LASIK stands for laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis surgery. It’s the most common eye surgery in the United States today. LASIK corrects three kinds of vision issues:
- Myopia, or nearsightedness
- Hyperopia, or farsightedness
- Astigmatism, irregular cornea curvature that causes fuzzy vision
During LASIK, your eye surgeon uses a state-of-the-art laser to reshape your cornea. This improves focus and clarity. For many patients, LASIK reduces or eliminates the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses.
Am I a good candidate for LASIK?
During a LASIK consultation at Ideal Family Eye Care, a highly trained doctor of optometry evaluates your suitability for LASIK. Although LASIK is an amazing procedure for vision correction, it’s not right for everyone. Your eye doctor checks for the following qualifications:
- 18 years or older
- Stable vision, with no prescription changes for a year or more
- Good eye health, with no corneal, retinal, or optic nerve issues
- Good overall health and wellness, with no autoimmune disease
- Healthy tear film
- Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
If you don’t currently meet the above qualifications, your Ideal Family Eye Care eye doctor can help with other options for vision correction. And you may qualify for LASIK at some point in the future.
How does LASIK surgery work?
During LASIK surgery, your eye surgeon carefully creates a small flap in your cornea so they can precisely shape your corneal tissue using computer guidance. Your eye surgeon removes only tiny quantities of tissue, doing this in increments until achieving the optimal cornea shape for vision correction.
Although a trusted local eye surgeon performs your LASIK, all of your pre- and post-LASIK care happens at Ideal Family Eye Care. Your Ideal Family Eye Care doctor works closely with your eye surgeon, co-managing your care to make sure that you get the best results possible from your LASIK procedure.
How long is recovery following LASIK?
After your LASIK surgery, there’s little downtime. In fact, most patients have better vision by the next day. A few days after your LASIK surgery, you visit your Ideal Family Eye Care optometrist to ensure that you’re healing well. Most LASIK patients only need to take a day or two off work to get excellent vision correction.
